Sleep Disorders: Snoring
Snoring is noisy breathing during sleep. While sleeping,
the muscles of the throat relax, the tongue falls backwards and
the throat becomes narrow and flaccid. Then, when breathing,
the walls of the throat begin to vibrate mainly during inhalation
but also to a lesser extent during exhalation.
People who snore make a vibrating, rattling noisy sound while breathing
during sleep. It may be a symptom of sleep apnea. Consult
your physician if you snore and have any of the
following symptoms:
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Recent weight gain
- Awakening in the morning and not feeling rested
- Awaking at night feeling confused
- Notice a change in the ability to focus or concentrate
Treatment
While snoring can be treated with a surgical procedure, snoring
with sleep apnea is usually only corrected with PAP therapy.
