Sleep Disorders: Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
RLS is a sleep disorder in which a person experiences unpleasant
sensations in the legs described as creeping, crawling, pulling,
or painful sensations. More than 80% of people with RLS also
have periodic limb movements (PLMS) which is characterized by involuntary
jerking movements during sleep.
Symptoms:
- Uncomfortable sensations in the legs (especially while sitting
or lying down)
- Irresistible urge to move about
- Pacing the floor or constantly keeping legs in motion
Treatment
There are currently a variety of treatments of RLS, mainly self
directed activities but more recently, medications. Walking,
Massaging the legs, stretching, hot or cold packs, vibration, acupressure
and relaxation techniques are the best methods for treating RLS.
